We've just recently had a discussion on this ng of whether it's ever
appropriate to pay an entry fee in order to submit a story to a
competition. Personally, I think the answer is no. Money should
flow toward the author; anything that violates that rule is probably
a scam.

Contests with reasonable fees are fairly common, however. I know
that my local romance writers group (and many many similar romance
groups) make their money through contests. I cringe a little but the
winners of those *do* get an intro to editors and agents as part of
the deal. And I just sent $15 to Glimmer Train so I'm guilty of
paying out the wrong direction.

I suppose the thing to do would be to look into it a bit and find out
if it all seems legitimate, if the prize pay-outs are made and read
the winning stories from previous contests. OTOH, I've got little
warning flags going up that winningwriters is nothing *but* a contest
business and then all they do for you is post your winning story or
essay on a website, which just about anyone can do for themselves.
